Somaliland is often portrayed as a conflict-ridden and chaotic region, lacking in development and in need of reconciliation. Once known as the land of Punt, an area of prosperity with abundant natural resources, it has become a place of war and revolution, where subtle tribal differences have caused trauma and division. Healing and reconciliation are therefore key to the development of Hargeisa, the capital city of Somaliland, which remains underdeveloped and in need of transformation.
In the age of enlightenment, digitalization has become an integral part of our everyday lives, offering a new way of understanding and sharing knowledge. The metaverse, networking, and the internet have become tools that bind technology, perceptual reality, and memory into one. This project explores the merge between digitalization and technology to heal the city, physically, practically, and metaphysically. It proposes a self-growing mechanism that incorporates a bottom-up approach to city development, generated by the collective, and formulates a diverse and unique cultural identity for the city.
The project aims to establish a self-sustaining underground foundation that becomes a vision towards a bottom-up approach to city development. The city's transformation will be driven by the collective, allowing for the formulation of a diverse and unique cultural identity. This approach to city development is generative and resilient, adapting to the natural growth of the people and the city. The project teases the intangible within the tangible reality, exploring a new way of placemaking and the collective identity of what a city should be.
